Aquatic OT (Pool-Based Therapy)

Aquatic Occupational Therapy sessions leverage the unique properties of water to help individuals achieve therapeutic goals, improve function, and increase independence in their daily lives. By moving the therapy environment into the pool, we can provide a supportive and dynamic setting for rehabilitation and skill development.

Key Therapeutic Elements

Harnessing the Properties of Water: Water acts as a dynamic tool, offering simultaneous support and resistance; for example:

Buoyancy reduces gravity's effects, providing support that can reduce joint compression and pain, making movement easier for individuals with limited strength or mobility.

Resistance: Water's viscosity provides natural, adjustable resistance that strengthens muscles without traditional weights. Movement speed dictates the level of challenge.

Hydrostatic Pressure: The pressure exerted by water helps reduce swelling, improve circulation, and provide a calming, deep-pressure sensory input.

Core Engagement and Strength: The aquatic environment's instability naturally challenges balance and stability, thereby enhancing core engagement and strength. Clients actively recruit trunk muscles to maintain position and control movement, which is essential for better posture, functional mobility, and reducing the risk of falls both in and out of the water.

Enhanced Body Awareness (Proprioception): The constant feedback from the water's pressure and resistance heightens proprioception (the sense of where the body is in space). This improved sensory input helps clients develop better motor planning, coordination, and control over their movements, leading to greater confidence and efficiency in functional tasks.

Aquatic Occupational Therapy is an engaging and effective way to overcome physical and developmental challenges, making therapy feel less like work and more like play.
